October 2024 Update: Exciting Events

It’s been a good month and lots of exciting things have happened.

Early in October I visited the Council of Catholic Women at Saint Theresa Parish in New Cumberland to talk about books and publishing. I was delighted to find them receptive to an independent author and enjoyed answering questions about my process. These ladies are avid readers and I appreciated them taking the time to talk with me!

It’s the time of year for harvest festivals and falling leaves and apples. I’m a sucker for a good apple dumpling and the folks at New Cumberland Community Church baked them again this year. I don’t always get a chance to grab some, but I got lucky this year and picked up several, currently waiting in my freezer to be enjoyed over the next few weeks. Yum!

Two amazing natural phenomena occurred this month. On October 10th, I took this photo of the Northern Lights from my front yard, amazing because there is no lack of light around my home. I was surprised to see them as well as I did.

This was followed by the Hunters Moon on the 17th. This was also a SuperMoon, absolutely stunning to see. The photo here was taken a day or so before, at dusk. It looks like full daylight, doesn’t it?

As the weather gets colder, I’ve been bringing a few of the more tender plants from my garden inside. My arabica coffee trees are first on my list, because the cold affects them quickly. Unfortunately, bringing them into the dry house is hard on them, no matter how often I mist them. Even so, every summer when I put them out, they thrive and grow a few inches. This one is a great example. When I first got these plants they were less than ten inches tall, about the height of the pumpkin in the photo. Now look!

I’m working away on the next Risk Series book – Personal Risk, set in Jim Thorpe, PA. It will be some months yet, but in the meantime, don’t forget to check out that short story I mentioned in the last newsletter, A Logical Man, which you can find on the Extras page of sandynork.com. Let me know if there is anything else you’d like to see there, perhaps some short pieces that I have been working on, or other stories featuring the characters from Special Risk and Flood Risk. Who would you like to know more about? Send a message to let me know.

Enjoy your Autumn!

Sandy
